Pre/Post Surgical Rehab

The goal is to optimize the outcomes of surgery, promote healing, minimize complications, and restore the patient's strength, mobility, and overall function.

Pre-surgical rehab focuses on preparing patients for the upcoming surgical procedure. The rehabilitation process typically involves the following aspects:

Evaluation and Assessment: Our physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist will evaluate your current functional abilities, strength, range of motion, and any specific impairments or limitations. This assessment helps in developing an individualized treatment plan.

Education and Preoperative Instructions: Our patients are educated about the surgical procedure, its expected outcomes, and the importance of rehabilitation. They may be given instructions on exercises, breathing techniques, and lifestyle modifications to enhance their overall health and fitness prior to surgery.

Preconditioning Exercises: Specific exercises and therapeutic interventions may be prescribed to strengthen the muscles, improve flexibility, enhance cardiovascular endurance, and optimize overall physical health. These exercises can help minimize postoperative complications, expedite recovery, and improve surgical outcomes.

Post-surgical rehab focuses on the recovery and rehabilitation process following the surgical procedure. The treatments and interventions vary depending on the type of surgery performed, but typically include the following:

Pain Management: Pain control is an essential component of post-surgical rehab. Therapists may use various techniques such as manual therapy, modalities (e.g., ice, heat, electrical stimulation), and exercises to manage pain and promote comfort.

Wound Care and Scar Management: Rehabilitation specialists provide guidance on wound care, dressing changes, and scar management techniques to ensure proper healing and minimize scar tissue formation.

Range of Motion and Strengthening Exercises: Gradual introduction of range of motion exercises helps to regain joint mobility and prevent stiffness. As healing progresses, specific strengthening exercises are incorporated to rebuild muscle strength and restore functional abilities.

Balance and Coordination Training: Depending on the surgical procedure and the patient's condition, balance and coordination exercises may be included to enhance stability and prevent falls or complications related to impaired balance.

Gait Training: For patients with lower extremity surgeries, gait training is essential to regain a normal walking pattern and restore functional mobility.

Functional Rehabilitation: The rehabilitation program focuses on improving the patient's ability to perform daily activities and tasks, such as getting in and out of bed, dressing, bathing, and reaching or lifting objects.

Patient Education and Lifestyle Modification: Patients are educated on post-surgical precautions, proper body mechanics, and strategies to prevent re-injury. They may also receive guidance on lifestyle modifications, including exercise routines and healthy habits, to maintain long-term recovery and prevent future complications.
